With 2021 not off to the best of starts and the country in lockdown, Kingsley is throwing himself into his winter training programme. After forming a bubble with Roddy, his strength and , Kingsley is able to train three times a week at Roddy’s personal gym where he continues to beat his personal bests week on week. “After a week off over the Christmas period I was worried I may have lost some of the strength I’d built up, but it was the opposite. The rest obviously agreed with me and I went back into the gym in January feeling fitter and stronger, going on to smash my pre-Christmas times.”

One of the toughest elements of lockdown for me is not having the team comradery in the gym”

During winter training rowers are usually off the water, focusing on building strength and stamina for the return to the sculls in March, a return Kingsley is hopeful will go ahead. “One of the toughest elements of lockdown for me is not having the team comradery in the gym, we support one another, championing each other’s successes and assessing where we can improve. I’m lucky to still be able to train with Roddy but I do miss the atmosphere of the club and the wider team. To try and compensate I’ve joined Zoom ergos, and will be running my own training sessions there. ”Zoom ergos is a global online community of rowers across a range of capabilities from hard and fast enthusiasts to Olympic gold medallists. Everyday the community has to opportunity to each run and have others join them in their training session via video link. “I’m excited about my Zoom ergos event, usually there are anything between 30 and 100 rowers joining each session so it’s a great way to integrate with the rowing community across the world, I’ve always loved tech but am even more grateful for the advancements we have during lockdown.”

As well as running training sessions Kingsley will also be racing (from the comfort of his home) at Endurow, the world’s largest inclusive indoor rowing event to help raise funds and awareness for spinal cord injury research. Bringing together together rowers from a range of backgrounds and capabilities Kingsley will be rowing for 4 hours straight joining him for all of part of the challenge.
